Paramakudi Railway Station (PMK) — The Pleated Form

Developed in collaboration with the Southern Railways, Madurai Division, this project forms part of the Amrit Bharat Scheme, focused on the expansion, renovation, and contextual revitalization of an existing suburban railway station.

The primary design challenges addressed were facade upgradation and improving passenger movement efficiency. The new architectural expression introduces a pleated facade form inspired by the traditional cotton saree weaving heritage of the Paramakudi weaving community, creating a strong cultural connection while modernizing the station’s identity.

Executing the project required working within tight timelines and strict railway-approved material specifications, balancing functionality, durability, and contextual design sensitivity.
